Combo of Chill Fog + Combusting Wounds and later Combusting Wounds and AoE from Citzal's Spirit Lance work great. Summoned weapons benefit from any weapon focus talents, Galant Focus is nice too and thanks to Chill Fog and other CC spells it's worth to pick apprentice sneak attack. Melee wizards use talents for 2h weapons so try to build them like fighters. Belt of Royal Deadfire Cannoneer is great at the beginning - easy to level up, grants powerful Firebrand (another summoned weapon) and flame shield. You should avoid encounters if you want to pick gloves of manipulation or ring of searing flames. Veteran's Recovery is usaually good (if you have high INT and MIG), but Concelhaut's Staff should be enough to heal you in combat and as every summoned weapon it has better enchantement than any weapon you could get at this time. Wizards have very low Accuracy and Deflection, so you have to pick Arcane Veil and its upgraded version, put some point in Perception if you want to survive close combat. I give Grieving Mother light to light/medium armor, and dual weilds small fast attack weapons so she can build up focus and cast her confusing/dominating spells, converting part of the enemy forces to my side.įirst act can be difficult. Their crowd control spells are generally shorter ranged than the wizards, so I find them more successful closer to the front line of a battle. I think a melee cypher would be more successful than the wizard. I always have Kana's & Palagina's lore skill high, and as they are melee focused, they can also cast spells through scrolls when needed. I'm experiencing the same thing - completed his quest and larger chunk of the game but still stuck at rep 1 with him and no extra romance dialogues or anything. One of the many things I like about POE, is that you can increase any characters Lore skill to the point that they can use higher level scrolls, so if you really want or need spells cast on the front line this is a way to do it. Looks like another one of those relationship system bugs. Nothing wrong with thinking outside the box, but I think a melee wizard would end up being more frustrating than successful. Their primary effectiveness in combat is their spell casting, especially AOEs in later stages of the game. Another reason that a melee wizard would be a difficult build, is that you would need to put them in heavier armor which increased their recovery time between attacks or spell castings.
